This Is Halloween

Halloween is the beginning of my favorite time of year. The weather is absolutely gorgeous and there’s something about the quality of the light in the sky, it’s like every hour is golden hour. It’s this time of year when I really come to life and I suddenly get crafty. Peep a few things we did around the house!

I think I bought this from Costco in June like a total nutjob. I was so excited to see it and just thinking about fall was giving me the warm and fuzzies. At $99.99 (in store), this set practically jumped into my cart and I’m so glad it did because it is beautiful. The photo isn’t doing it justice. There are so many little details on the back as well as the front and most of the elements light up. The lights on the main house flicker sporadically and there is a spooky sound mode you can choose to switch on or off. Of course I had to display it on top of my Haunted Mansion wallpaper themed runner, right?!

It helped to set him up in September. I know it seems too early, but it made our house memorable. We had 3x the number of trick or treaters this year than the year before! Totally worth it.

There is a lighting kit that attaches to the inside of the sternum so at night you see a beautiful color changing light show. In order to not make our skelly too frightening for the littles I added pipe cleaner glasses, a batwing bowtie, and a cute treat bag for him to hold. To round out the ensemble he’s holding a “31” made of gold foil balloons mounted to chicken wire. He’s nerding-out for Halloween!

Continuing on the Haunted Mansion theme is a literal plaque in case it wasn’t obvious what we were trying to achieve. Next year I might just physically mount it to the post since the “hooks and some wire” is giving How the Grinch Stole Christmas vibes and we weren’t going for that.

I also made mourning bunting in the traditional Haunted Mansion colorway of emerald green and black. The rosettes are handmade as well with the prettiest art nouveau medallions in the middle. All this effort gets lost in the dark and on small children, but whatever. I like it!

Bestill my heart! Just look at these guys! I saw them on an afternoon outing to the Oakland Zoo. They were down near the entrance to the area where you can pet goats. Along with the zebra in the background, these fellas were dressed as ghosts. A staff member took it upon themselves to knit precious little pumpkin buckets and costumes for them because how else are they going to trick-or-treat? My kids loved seeing this display, and I almost died on the spot from cuteness overload. Thank you to whomever took the time and care to make this happen!
